Christmas 2015

Santa visited our house a couple of days late....Dec 27 to be exact. I have to say, it was SO AWESOME to celebrate Christmas in our own home. I had never done it in my adult life.  It made me double think always traveling. It was so nice to just be in our PJ's and be able to have our space and not having to worry about shoving toys in a suitcase. In any event, we had a lovely morning and it was a treat to have my mom join us.

Shelby was full of joy and loved her gifts! Thank you to everyone who thought of us!

What I Did Not Expect

I expected a natural delivery to be painful. To be intense. I expected to fall in love with my sweet baby girl, the moment I laid eyes on her. What I did not expect, however was to leave the hospital with a black eye and a gash on my cheek bone. I was quite the sight.

I delivered Sienna and was moved upstairs to the recovery room, where I stayed for the next couple of days. It was about 1 a.m. and I had to use the restroom for the first time since having the baby. I stood up....went to the bathroom.....walked to the sink....called for Jack and then CRASH. Next thing I knew, I was on the ground with blood in my preiphral vision, not knowing exactly how I got there. I fainted and WOW - did my face hurt. Jack hollered for help and the hospital staff was very alamared. They asked if I fainted often and of course, I said no. They told me not to go to the restroom my myself moving forward. No problem. I was afraid to anyway...

The next time, the exact same thing happened, except I was in Jack's arms, so I did not further injure myself. Stood up, bathroom, heading toward sink and then CRASH! After that, I was not permitted to stand up for a couple of days. They ran a battery of tests and they all came back normal/negative. The staff would come in and ask about my pain levels and to be honest, the only thing that hurt, was my face!

As a souvenier, I have a bashed face in the majority of my hosiptal photos and all of my Christmas photos. Who would have thought!.

Here's the three of us packing up to go home! This image does not look too bad....it took a couple couple of days for all the red, purple and yellow to set in. People would give me the strangest looks!

Sister Sister

"There's my baby sissy."

What a special moment to have Shelby walk into my hospital room. By the time she arrived, I had missed her so much. I knew she missed us and I was so excited for her to meet the "baby sissy" that she had anticipated for so long.   Her first question - "Where's her bottle of milk?"

'Twas the Night Before Christmas

...and I went to the hospital to meet my baby girl. It started like a normal Thursday. Jack went to work, I answered some emails and Shelby downed some "breakfast milk" while watching morning cartoons. For the day, I had three things on my to-do list: 1) Finish a press release 2) Make it to the grocery store and 3) Let Shelby make Christmas cookies. We had not communicated  to Shelby when Santa was coming, for fear that I would go into labor and dash her dreams, and as it turned out -- that was a wise decision.

As I impatiently made my way through a crowded grocery store on XMas eve, I was cramping. I wanted nothing more than to get the heck out of there. My mom says people were giving me stares left and right - maybe they knew something I did not know. When we got home, I quickly unloaded the groceries and got Shelby started on decorating cookies. I was going to bake them and then decorate them, but my mom had the wise suggestion of eliminating a step and just grabbing some from the bakery. Thanks mom!

Shelby had a great time decorating cookies and the moment she was done,  I cleaned her up and got her down for a nap. I was waiting for her to nap so I could focus on edited a very important press release.  As I laid in my bed drafting the release, I just could not get comfortable and the "cramps" continued. I was stubborn though - I had to finish it. I promised my team.  I hit send at 1:49 p.m. I stood up to go down stairs and clean up a few things and the cramps got worse. I got a text from Jack that said he was going to Lowes....I told him to hurry.

In the next twenty minutes I went into labor denial. Inside I knew I was in labor, but I was trying to convince myself otherwise. I started to boil chicken, folded laundry, started to wash the sheets and even had a friend stop by. The "cramps" got worse and I sent Jack a get home now text and asked my mom to dust off the car seat base. Within 10 minutes of his arrival, we were off to the hospital. By 3 p.m. I was 6.5 cm and was admitted to the hospital. Here we go!!

My first delivery took so long that mentally I was thinking the baby would be born on Christmas day, but the hospital staff was convinced that I would have it that evening. Sounded good to me. I elected to go drug free, and I have to say - it was a FAR better experience than delivering Shelby with an epidural. The last hour was intense and the mantra of "you'll know when it is time to push," is a true statement.  With Jack by my side and rubbing my back with every painful contraction, we swiftly welcomed Sienna Noelle Schenk into the world at 8:33 p.m. with just a handful of pushes. Maybe three?  She was beautiful and almost the exact size as Shelby. Sienna was 9 lbs 8.5 oz (so they round up to 9lbs 9 oz) and Shelby was 9 lbs 8.3 oz (so they left her at 9lns 8oz). Her cheeks were a conversation starter from moment one. And those lips....my girls have beautiful lips.

Welcome to the world Sienna. Your future is bright, your soul is pure and you have already brought us so much joy!

Christmas Cookies

If this does not serve as a toddler cookie PSA, I don't know what will. One part love, three parts germs. As you can see though, my Mom and Shelby had a sweet time preparing cookies for Santa!

My Shelby girl!

Toppings anyone?

Check out those fingers!

Lighthouse Academy - Holiday Performance

Shelby's new school (which is going great!) put on an adorable holiday production. I was fearful at first that I was not going to be able to make it, but my awesome boss encouraged me to go. Shelby was not too smiley, but she was outstanding, especially since she had only practiced a couple weeks and everyone else had practiced for months. I love that she is the tall one in the back....and obviously the cutest :)

Las Vegas Philharmonic

While Jack's parents were in town, my friend got us all tickets to the Las Vegas Philharmonic to see the holiday performance of "The Snowman." It was a 90 minute performance and I was not sure how Shelby would do, but naturally, she exceeded expectations and was just wonderful. I think the boxed seats and snacks helped. I think a great time was had by all. Added bonus - Santa sighting!

Santa in the Pod

This weekend our neighborhood hosted a "Merry Morning" with Santa. It started at 8am and since we wake with the roosters around here, I thought I would take Shelby down the street to check it out. It was ok....certainly underwhelming, but again - I am grateful. Shelby was the first in line to meet Santa and she raced down the red carpet upon his arrival. There were some (super sugary!) breakfast snacks, face painting and more. We did not stick around too long - it was cold out and we were anxious to get on with our day. As you can see though, Shelby thought it was top notch!

Love this photo!
